Payal Jangid: The Right to a Safe Education

Payal is from a village in an area of India called Rajasthan. Due to widespread poverty, Rajasthan’s conditions are difficult for young children to navigate—many girls as young as twelve years old are forced into marriage and lose access to education. As a preteen, she herself escaped a child marriage and eventually went on to become an activist for children’s rights. She leads the Bal Panchayat (Children’s Parliament) in her village, which addresses a lot of the issues children are faced with in schools and in their home lives. She fights to protect girls from marriage, support their right to go to school, and helps make her village a more child- friendly place.
